Premium Spores is a hard vendor to argue with. They’ve been at it since 2013, they run an ISO 7 cleanroom, they agar-test every batch, and they carry 60+ strains including Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe cyanescens — species most shops skip entirely. Their Golden Teacher syringe sits around $19.99. They answer a phone.

So this isn’t a takedown. If you’re happy there, stay.

But there are three specific things Premium Spores doesn’t do, and if one of them is your bottleneck, no amount of catalog depth fixes it.

The three gaps

1. No liquid culture for Psilocybe research. Premium Spores sells liquid culture — but only gourmet species. Their entire Psilocybe line is spores: multispore syringes, isolated syringes, prints, swabs. If your work is on hyphal development and mycelial network formation rather than spore morphology, they have no product for you.

2. Isolated syringes expire in about three months. This is on their own site: isolated spore syringes must be refrigerated and stay viable roughly three months, versus nine-plus months for multispore. That’s not a defect — it’s the nature of the format. But it means you can’t buy isolates as reference stock. You buy them for a specific session and use them.

3. Batch testing happens, but you can’t see it. “Every batch is tested on agar” is a real claim and probably a true one. It’s also not something you can independently verify before you order.

If none of those are dealbreakers, close this tab and go buy from them. If one of them is, here are five options.

1. Premium Spores — when to stay put

Two situations where they’re the right answer and we’re not:

You’re in California or Florida. Premium Spores restricts only Georgia and Idaho. SporesMD restricts four states — California, Georgia, Idaho, and Florida — so if you’re in CA or FL, we will cancel and refund your order. They won’t. That’s the whole analysis.

You want species beyond cubensis. Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe cyanescens aren’t in our catalog. If your taxonomy work needs comparative material across Psilocybe species, we can’t serve it and they can.

Their honest weak spot is the one above: no Psilocybe liquid culture, and a three-month clock on isolates.

2. SporesMD

Best for: liquid culture as a primary format, plus documentation you can check before ordering.

We built the catalog around microscopy liquid cultures rather than treating them as an add-on — 30+ strains at $29.99 for 10ml, isolated lines at $34.99. Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, Albino Penis Envy, Tidal Wave, Jack Frost, Enigma. Spore syringes, prints, and swabs are all there too.

Like Premium Spores, we run an ISO-7 cleanroom and screen every batch. Unlike Premium Spores, the results are posted on a public lab results page — phase-contrast microscopy plus agar plating for sterility. Same standard, different transparency.

On cost: our per-unit price is higher, but the economics change at volume. Subscriptions save 20%, the buy-2-get-1 promo runs on most liquid cultures, bundles start at $49, and the 6-pack mystery bundle is $89. There’s also a wholesale program and white label, which Premium Spores doesn’t publicly offer.

Where we fall short: 30+ strains against their 60+. No CA or FL shipping. No cubensis-adjacent species. And if you only want a single cheap Golden Teacher syringe, $19.99 beats $29.99 and we’re not going to pretend otherwise.

Not sure which format your research calls for? Spore syringe vs. liquid culture covers it.

3. Inoculate the World

Best for: the deepest exotic catalog, if you can catch things in stock.

ITW has operated since 2016 and carries north of 100 strains, with a steady stream of wild-foraged exotic genetics that don’t exist elsewhere. Their isolated syringe line is well regarded, dispatch is usually within 24 hours, and they ship to more states than we do.

Where they fall short: the exotic drops sell out fast — that’s the single most consistent complaint in customer reviews. Plan to buy when you see it rather than when you need it.

We wrote a fuller breakdown here: Inoculate the World alternatives.

4. Sporeworks

Best for: research that’s moved well past cubensis.

Operating since October 1998, which makes them one of the oldest spore vendors still running. That longevity bought them a catalog of rare and exotic species and cultures that newer shops can’t match. They accept crypto and mail-in payment alongside cards, and they run a separate European storefront shipping from Austria — useful if you’ve had EU customs eat an order before.

Where they fall short: the site is dated and browsing a deep catalog through it takes patience. They refuse Psilocybe genera orders to California, Idaho, Florida, and Georgia — the same four-state list we use, so no help if that’s your problem.

5. MYYCO

Best for: researchers who want isolated liquid culture and nothing else.

MYYCO doesn’t sell spores at all. Only isolated liquid cultures, on the argument that selecting a single stable phenotype from early-stage mycelium beats the genetic lottery of a multispore syringe. They’re a registered California benefit corporation donating 100% of profits to research nonprofits including MAPS, Johns Hopkins, and Heroic Hearts. Gourmet line is USDA Certified Organic. Contaminated syringes get replaced or refunded.

Where they fall short: small catalog, and nothing at all if you need ungerminated spores. Their compliance stance is also unusually rigid — they state they’ll cancel your order and blacklist your account if you ask a cultivation question. Fine for microscopy work, but worth knowing before you email support.

6. Spore Genetics

Best for: picking exactly what you want in a bundle.

Most vendor bundles are curated — you get the vendor’s choice. Spore Genetics runs build-your-own 4-packs for both standard and isolated syringes, so you choose all four. They prepare in-house using first-generation genetics with verified spore density, ship within 24 hours, and carry some genuinely uncommon lines alongside the classics.

Where they fall short: they’re newer than everyone else on this list, which means less community track record to check. Start with one syringe.

The isolated syringe shelf-life thing, explained

This trips up more researchers than anything else on this page, and Premium Spores deserves credit for stating it plainly on their site when many vendors bury it.

Multispore syringes hold spores from a mature specimen — genetically varied material spanning the natural range of that strain. Those spores are dormant, and dormancy is stable. Nine months refrigerated is normal, and longer is common.

Isolated syringes hold material from a single selected genetic line. Uniform sample, ideal when you need a consistent reference across multiple sessions. But that uniformity comes from live, selected material, and live material has a clock on it. Three months refrigerated is the realistic planning window.

The practical implication: don’t stock isolates. Buy multispore syringes for your reference library and isolates for the specific comparison you’re running this quarter. Buying six isolates to have on hand means most of them expire unexamined.

Neither format is better. They answer different questions. More on keeping either one alive: how to store spore syringes and how long mushroom spores last.

State restrictions differ between vendors — check before you shop

This is the part people skip and then get an unexpected refund email.

Ungerminated Psilocybe cubensis spores contain no psilocybin or psilocin and aren’t scheduled under the federal Controlled Substances Act — a position the DEA has confirmed in writing. Legality at the state level is where it diverges, and so do vendor policies:

  • Premium Spores restricts Georgia and Idaho.
  • SporesMD restricts California, Georgia, Idaho, and Florida.
  • Sporeworks restricts California, Idaho, Florida, and Georgia.

Same federal law, different risk postures. A vendor’s list isn’t legal advice about your state — it’s their compliance decision. Check your own jurisdiction’s current law before ordering from anyone, including us.

Germination is a separate question with a different answer, and buying from a stricter or looser vendor doesn’t change it. Everything we sell is for microscopy, taxonomy, and educational research. Full breakdown: the legality of possessing mushroom spores for research.

FAQ

Is Premium Spores a good vendor? Yes. Since 2013, ISO 7 cleanroom, 60+ strains, agar-tested batches, phone support, free shipping over $100. People look at alternatives for format reasons — mainly liquid culture — not quality reasons.

What’s the closest alternative to Premium Spores? For catalog breadth and exotic variety, Inoculate the World and Sporeworks are the nearest matches. For liquid culture, SporesMD or MYYCO, since Premium Spores only offers it in gourmet species.

Does Premium Spores sell liquid culture? Gourmet species only. Their Psilocybe line is spore formats exclusively — multispore syringes, isolated syringes, prints, and swabs.

Why do isolated spore syringes expire faster? They contain a single selected genetic line rather than dormant multispore material. Roughly three months refrigerated versus nine-plus for multispore. Buy isolates for a specific research window, not for storage.

Can I buy spores in California or Florida? Premium Spores ships to both. SporesMD does not — we restrict California, Georgia, Idaho, and Florida, and we’ll cancel and refund those orders. Vendor policies vary; your state law is what actually governs you.

Should I use more than one vendor? At first, yes. Named strains vary between labs. Ordering the same strain from two sources and comparing under the scope tells you more about a vendor than any review page will.

Where to start

If you need liquid culture for Psilocybe research, that’s the gap Premium Spores leaves open. A single 10ml syringe from our microscopy collection is $29.99, and the buy-2-get-1 promo makes a three-strain comparison cheap enough to treat as a test.

If you want to compare formats before committing, the beginner bundle is $49.

And if you’re in California or Florida, or you need Psilocybe mexicana — go to Premium Spores. We’d rather point you somewhere useful than waste your time.
